Necklace Birthday Cake

After working on several large and complicated cakes, it's nice to work on a smaller, simpler cake like this lovely 80th birthday cake for a client of Flur bakery. The swags were done in sugar pearls and gumpaste gems to give the appearance of a vintage necklace and the cake is topped with gumpaste roses and calla flowers.

BBQ Rib and Grill Cake

Remember the black and white wedding cake I posted earlier? I also had the pleasure of making their groom's cake too! Apparently the groom LOVES bbq ribs, so the bride wanted a cake of a Weber grill with a rack of ribs that she surprised him with at the reception. Well, I had a real blast making this cake.

The grill is made out of a 12-inch round cake. I carved the center to make room for the fondant charcoal. The grill bars were tricky. It took me a loooong time to figure out a way to suspend the grill bars above the charcoal, yet not put any weight on the cake. After what seemed like an hour of considering my options, I had an a-ha moment. I ended up making the grill bars out of wooden dowels and gluing them to a support board that is hidden under the ribs. I supported this whole piece from underneath with dowels so that its weight is completely suspended and it didnt collapse the cake. Brilliant- if I do say so myself.

The grill lid and the rack of ribs are made out of krispy treats, and the ribs are slathered in colored piping gel to give the appearance of gooey bbq sauce. I love how this cake turned out, but I think my favorite part is the brush that I made out of gumpaste and more piping gel "sauce."

Black and White Wedding Cake

Those of you who know me well know that I LOVE the color combination of black and white. So I was psyched when a client of Flur wanted their wedding cake to be black and white. YES!

We designed the middle tier to echo the lace on the bride's gown. I used a stencil to get the pattern on the cake, then hand piped black royal icing on top of the pattern and used the brush embroidery technique to give it a lace-like effect.

The top and bottom tiers are done in Swiss dots and the whole cake is embellished with a variety of purple hydrangea, iris, and freesia.

Tiffany Blue Wedding Cake

Ok, I have a new favorite flower now.... Anemones (I am a sucker for black and white). I decorated this cake for a client of Flur bakery to match their invitation. I really like the simplicity of the design and color palette of Tiffany blue with black and white- sophisticated and elegant.

You WILL be seeing more of these flowers on future cakes. Love!

Nautical Wedding Cake

I loved making this nautical wedding cake for clients of Flur bakery who got married on a boat. The navy and white stripes are trimmed with fondant rope that I made into a Love Knot- which was deceptively hard to make- but really beautiful in the end. Gumpaste anchor, roses and large peony accent the cake.

Girl Minion

Who says a Minion has to be male?! I was excited to create this large, 3D girl Minion for a special 2nd Birthday for Emma. The birthday girl wore a super cute custom dress, so I made the Minion's outfit to match. Fun!

Happy 50th Brigitte!

It's always special for me to make a cake for a dear friend... and even more fun when its for their surprise party! My dear friend Brigitte turned the big 50 and her husband threw her a lovely dinner party at The Dawson in Chicago. Although he is the former Executive Chef of the swanky Peninsula Hotel and has his pick of cake decorators and pastry chefs, he wanted Brigitte's friends Adriana of Flur bakery and me to create the cake. He wanted to make sure it was whimsical and filled with everything that Brigitte loves... No pressure at all with a room full of chefs and restauranteurs!

Me, Brigitte and Adriana

I knew that she loves her cat Denver like a child, but I didn't realize that my demur friend is a HUGE ice hockey fan- in particular the Colorado Avalanche.

Brigitte also loves the beach, Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia and flowers.

She loves blue so I echoed the blue wave pattern from her favorite dress as the overall pattern of the cake- which also worked with the beach theme. I also included the logo for Tisch, her banquet table company that she recently launched. See her beautifully designed tables at here.

When I visited her a few days later, I was pleased to meet Denver in person and see the gumpaste version perched on her window sill.

Batman Dark Knight Birthday Cake

For 3 years now I have been making Javian's birthday cakes and this year I was excited to make his special Batman cake. The birthday boy wanted the new Batman logo... which is a little edgier than the old one- and now that he is a big boy, we went with more dramatic color scheme and Gotham skyline. Happy 3rd Javian!

Yo Gabba Gabba Brobee Cake

I was honored to be asked by Icing Smiles, a nonprofit that supplies special birthday cakes to children battling illness, to make a cake for sweet Wilson's 2nd birthday. I was excited to hear that Wilson likes Brobee, the fuzzy green monster from the kids program Yo Gabba Gabba.

I carved Brobee out of 4 eight-inch round layers. I first covered him in fondant and then used an extruder to make all of the fondant fur.

Wilson with his older brother and mother.

Happy 2nd Birthday Wilson!

Anchor's Away Cake

A lovely couple got married this past weekend on a yacht on Lake Michigan. I'm looking forward to doing their big cake for their official party in August, but for now, this darling little 6-inch anchor cake hallmarked their special day. They chose the decadent Chocolate Obsession cake from Flur. The name says it all. YUM!!!

I hand made the anchor out of gumpaste.

Topped with a cluster of red gumpaste roses.

Charlie Brown Wedding Castle Cake

I totally love to create a unique cake customized to an occasion or people. I previously posted a castle cake that I made for display in Flur's window. An adorable couple fell in love with it and wanted it customized to their wedding. The groom's last name is Brown and he has always been a fan of Charlie Brown-so together we came up with this whimsical castle cake with Charlie Brown knight, bride, Snoopy warding off a dragon, and (my personal favorite) Woodstock. Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Brown!

Camping Birthday Cake

I loved making the decorations for a little girl's camping birthday party for a client of Flur bakery. From the tent, to the fire, to the marshmallow roasting on a stick. Cute, cute, cute!

I used some edible chocolate rocks to help create the fire pit and made the logs and fire out of fondant.

Happy Jean Dancing Queen

My friend Jean is one of the happiest people I know. She's never mad, never down. She always has a smile. We lived together in grad school way back when and every morning I would find her dancing in our living room to ABBA or some other happy music. So happy 40th to my dear friend, Happy Jean!

She's probably going to kill me for posting this next photo.... but like I said- always happy, never mad ;)

Heavy Metal Mother's Day Kiss Cake

Remember the heavy metal band Kiss from the 70s? Well apparently they are still popular. I had an absolute BLAST decorating this small 6-inch cake that one very cool girl ordered from Flur bakery for her rock'n mom for Mothers Day. Love it!

The Gene Simmons inspired cake has his hallmark extra-long tongue, black eye paint and studded dog collar that I made with extra large silver dragees.

I made the Kiss logo out of gumpaste and covered them in mini silver dragees for a glam rock effect. Super fun cake to make!

Princess Castle Cake and Dragon

It's not often I get to create a cake that is entirely what I want to do, but that was the case for a display cake that I made for Flur bakery's Spring window display. I had the styrofoam castle topper and I wanted to create a cake that would be magical to girls (young and old). It's the kind of cake I would have flipped over as a child.

Jungle Animal Baby Shower Cake

You all probably know by now how much I love making cute little animals, so this jungle shower cake that I decorated for Flur Bakery client and mom-to-be Renee was right up my alley.

I loved hand modeling the adorable baby elephant, giraffe and monkey.
